Sunset by Author: three concerts at sunset with the young talents of the Conservatory “Mascagni”

The review is divided into three dates, August 24th, August 31st, and September 11th.

All concerts are free entry.

When the sun sets at the Terrazza Mascagni, music becomes the protagonist of a unique experience. Tramonti d’Autore is the cycle of sunset concerts that intertwines Pietro Mascagni’s legacy with the multiple voices of the Twentieth century, from jazz to classical to contemporary music. Promoted in collaboration by the Mascagni Festival and the Conservatorio “Mascagni” in Livorno, these events offer a broad look at the music production of the last century, enhancing the dialogue between tradition and innovation. An opportunity to experience music authentically, in an atmosphere that combines culture, beauty, and sharing.

The series is divided into three dates, 24th and 31st of August and 11th of September.

The first event, on Sunday 24th of August, will feature the Melting Pot Quartet, a group of young musicians from the Conservatorio: Stefano Gregori on guitar, Francesco Carone on piano, Simone Pesi on double bass, and Gianmarco Carlini on drums. The chosen repertoire is a tribute to Twentieth-century jazz, with pieces by giants like Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius, the Yellowjackets, and Joe Zawinul. An intimate and contemporary performance that combines virtuosity and sensitivity, in a continuous dialogue between the rarefied atmosphere of the sunset and the pulsating rhythm of music.

The series will continue on Sunday 31st of August with an evening dedicated to great chamber music. The Quartetto d’archi del Conservatorio will take the stage, composed of Alessandro Arieti and Elia Barsellotti on violins, Laura Teresa Clemente on viola, and Giada Campanelli on cello. The program includes two masterpieces of quartet repertoire: Beethoven’s Quartet op. 18 n. 3 and Alexander Borodin’s Quartet n. 2, known for the famous Notturno that constitutes its third movement. A precious opportunity to listen to young performers tackling pages of great intensity and sophistication, in an intimate and immersive setting.

Closing the series on Thursday 11th of September will be the Pithecanthropus Clarinet Ensemble, composed of students from the clarinet class of the Conservatorio directed by Maestro Carlo Failli. The program spans centuries and styles: from Mozart’s elegant classical architectures to contemporary experiments like Clarinet Processing Unit by Girolamo Deraco, also a teacher at the Livorno Conservatorio, to the visionary jazz of Charles Mingus. Twelve young clarinetists – including small clarinet, B-flat clarinets, basset horns, and bass clarinets – will bring on stage a dynamic and engaging ensemble, able to merge executive rigor and collective creativity.

These events confirm the role of the Conservatorio “P. Mascagni” as an active hub of culture and musical education in the area, capable of intertwining the symbolic places of the city with the creativity of the new generations.

All concerts are free admission.
