Population Street is a stretch of road in a southern town that used to be bustling with activity: two bars, three grocery stores, a blacksmith, a carpenter, a restaurant, a cinema… Two men walk along Population Street, one man from the present and one from the past. The first takes 2 minutes to walk 200 meters, the second takes 30 minutes. It’s the small Italian town that has changed, it’s the globalized society. Shops have been replaced by shopping centers and the end of retail has taken away jobs, destroying a social model still based on personal relationships. “Who do you belong to?” the old villagers would ask, who do you belong to? And from your answer they would gather essential information about your identity. Population Street is the story of belonging to a place, a family, a community. But those two hundred meters also represent a path of formation in which the foundations for future life are laid, from which emerge a poignant humanity, the relationship with fathers, initiation into life, politics, love.
