On July 27 at 4 pm, the archaeological exhibition “Capraia along the ancient routes: shipwrecks and submerged artifacts” will be inaugurated on the island of Capraia.
The exhibition, funded as part of the PNRR projects, aims to document the importance of the island of Capraia as an intermediate commercial stop on ancient routes (from the Etruscan period to the Renaissance period).

The numerous shipwrecks and archaeological artifacts found in the sea near the island testify to how the port of Capraia was used by the commercial traffic of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In its port, ships could stock up on water and take shelter from storms, to then continue towards the current territories of Liguria and France or vice versa towards the areas of central Italy.

Some of the artifacts come from recent discoveries in the sea surrounding the island of Capraia and are being exhibited to the public for the first time.

The exhibition is organized by the APS Association “Friends of the church of S. Antonio”, in collaboration with the Municipality of Capraia Isola and under the scientific direction of the ABAP Superintendence of Pisa and Livorno.

The exhibition is set up in the former Church of S. Antonio, which a decade-long restoration, funded by the Region of Tuscany, the Municipality of Capraia, and private donations, has enhanced as a multipurpose hall for the community of Capraia.
