Livorno, historically a city without walls and without a ghetto, has been for years the place where a free space of confrontation has been opened, an area of dialogue with civil societies, religious faiths, and people of the Mediterranean.
At the opening, greetings from civil and religious authorities, with interventions by Monsignor Simone Giusti, bishop of Livorno, Luca Salvetti, mayor of Livorno, and Eugenio Giani, president of the Region of Tuscany.
Andrea Riccardi, historian and founder of the Community of Sant’Egidio, will kick off the Medì 2025 works. “Beyond War” is the courageous title of the first session with interventions and testimonies from conflicts near and far.
Eighty years after the end of World War II and the nuclear explosion in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the efforts and passions of post-war reconstruction in Mediterranean cities, the long process of pacification, and the serious outcomes of global conflicts will be recalled. Inevitable is the comparison with the current conflict situation, the new nuclear threats, and rearmament choices.
On the second day, the focus shifts to migrations that Mediterranean cities are facing and will face, “For Love or by Force” – as the title of the conference reads – precisely because of conflicts and their consequences.
A few days after the passing of Pope Francis, remembering his voice and tireless work for peace, Barcelona, Genoa, Trieste, Istanbul, Latakia, Beirut, Odessa, Malta, Lesvos, Lampedusa gather in Livorno, despite the waves of history that engulf them. “Cities want to live.” Medì wants to make their voice heard.
