We think of the economy and the world of work as a series of numbers, statistics, flowcharts. Between the 1980s and the 2010s, the GDP in relation to business profits gained eight points, that is, one hundred and twenty billion euros per year. Wealth that ended up in profits and not in wages, income inequality that has widened enormously and workers’ incomes have plummeted. What humanity and what human cost lie behind the gap in a society that has defined the concept of work and value in terms of social accountancy?
To answer this question, Manlio Marinelli offers us a text that travels through the thought of Karl Marx – specifically that of his Early Philosophical Works – on the threads of a dialogue that explores the alienated and silently suffering humanity of contemporary society; that so-called liquid society which is instead a crushing quagmire where the most formidable existential slaughter of the last fifty years is played out.
