Turns off 7 candles the Racconti di Altre Danze Festival dedicated to performances, workshops, meetings, and practices of contemporary dance, conceived, created and directed since its birth in 2017 by Chelo Zoppi and Elena Giannotti.

The Festival will take place from October 6th to November 26th and will be accompanied by a series of other initiatives, some of which were already presented last year, while others are new.

Confirmations and novelties – Among the confirmations of this seventh year is the project “Danze di Cortile,” now in its second edition, which brings dance to the northern neighborhoods of Livorno, meeting the citizens and residents. “Danze di Cortile” is a project by Chelo Zoppi, curated by Atelier delle Arti, in collaboration with Racconti di Altre Danze Festival.

While the two important novelties are the workshops with the tenants of the neighborhoods involved in “Danze di Cortile,” led not only by Chelo Zoppi and Asia Pucci, and which will take place in October and November, and the exhibition set up at the Fondazione Trossi Uberti (via Ravizza), on December 2nd-3rd, featuring the works from the two years of the project, along with commissioned photos by Filippo Boccini, and various performances.

Danze di Cortile – For the second year, “Danze di Cortile” brings dance to the northern neighborhoods of Livorno, meeting the citizens and residents.

Four appointments, free admission, combining music, dance, and visual art, distributed as follows: September 26th in the Fiorentina neighborhood (Guglia- Barriera Garibaldi n 3,4,5,6), September 29th in Shangai (Blocco San Giovanni), October 3rd in Corea (Isolato Giardino), and October 7th in the Stazione neighborhood (Cortile via Badaloni 28). The schedule is: around 6:45-7 pm for the appointments on September 26th and 29th and October 3rd, and 11 am for October 7th.

“After creating projects that placed dance within the Museums and Libraries of our city,” say the organizers, “we felt the need to connect with that part of the territory that rarely encounters this type of artistic proposal. We want to connect with people, bring contemporary dance out of theaters. Starting from an investigation of the Northern Neighborhoods of our city – Shangai, Corea, Fiorentina, and Stazione – we observed how many of the social housing complexes had the characteristic of the “Edificio a Corte,” an architectural choice inherited from ancient Rome, and reintroduced in the 1920s in Italy, and in the 1950s/60s. The outskirts as places where contemporary artistic languages, especially dance, can reside and become strongholds of a path towards change, shifting the axis of culture by drawing a renewed geography of places, moving from social regeneration towards a sustainable vision of the city.”

Atelier delle Arti expresses a project that focuses on the body and its language in the perceptive and artistic dimension of contemporary times, particularly all the activities aimed at communities in the social field are developed through some issues to reflect on and base the research on, so the goal is: “To create a movement of change that brings out the body as the first political and democratic element, of which civil society becomes a careful and loving custodian, and to actively promote the research and construction of traces for the future, through the poetic testimony of all ages and all bodies.”

Also for this second edition of “Danze di Cortile,” there will be visual artists (varying each time) who will create a video on the spot and from it an additional product will be created to be shown to the residents.

Racconti di Altre Danze – From October 6th to November 26th, events related to “Racconti di Altre Danze” will take place and will be hosted in various locations in the city: Atelier delle Arti/Spazio Atelier (via Masini 3), Museo Fattori (via San Jacopo in Acquaviva), Museo della Città (piazza del Luogo Pio), Nuovo Teatro delle Commedie (via Terreni 5), and Teatro Goldoni (via Enrico Meyer 57).

The aim of “Racconti di Altre Danze” is to create a program that integrates and harmonizes different artistic and generational levels, with the goal of generating wider interest and involving a broader audience, not exclusively local, and creating relationships between users: informed audience, ordinary people, and niche groups. The project is implemented through both the regular programming of performances and the realization of actions, the creation of contexts and collaborations.

A dance that looks at research, constant investigation of the body in relation to the social and cultural context, a refined dance that at the same time engages a heterogeneous audience, through modes of exposure that infiltrate the fabric of the city, involving citizens directly and actively. A choice that aims to regenerate places, but above all minds, an idea of a festival that guides Livorno towards prestigious destinations, fitting into national and international itineraries.

Highlights – The Festival opens on October 6th at the Atelier delle Arti space with Daniele Ninarello performing “Nobody Nobody Nobody It’s Ok Not To Be Ok (Appunti, celebrazioni e proteste di un corpo vulnerabile)”.

On October 8th, the Museo Fattori hosts “Spiegel im spiegel,” choreographies by Chelo Zoppi, a choreographic workshop for citizens, adults, and people over 65, even without specific knowledge of body and dance languages.

On October 21st, Charlotte Zerbey’s Company Blu presents the performance “Ec(g)osystem,” inspired by Noam Chomsky’s theory of “Universal Grammar”. This dance-concert speculates on the idea of language as mostly natural and innate.

On November 10th, in a national premiere for Visioni Intime, the Nuovo Teatro delle Commedie will host Fabio Pronestì in “Souvenir,” while on November 12th, Elisabetta Consonni will present “Il secondo paradosso di Zenone” at the Museo della Città, freely inspired by the mathematical paradox of Achilles and the tortoise.
