Rashomon is a crime, drama, and mystery film from 1950 directed by Akira Kurosawa, starring Toshirô Mifune and Machiko Kyô.
To escape the rain, three people seek shelter under the Rasho-Mon temple gate: a Buddhist priest, a woodcutter, and a servant. The first two are troubled by an incident that occurred a few days before. A samurai was killed in the forest, and the authorities suspect the bandit Tagiomaru, who claims to have raped Mesago, the samurai’s wife, and then fought a duel with him. However, Mesago denies this, stating that she herself killed her husband after enduring his contempt. To discover the truth, the judges summon the spirit of the samurai. He claims that Mesago, after being possessed, invited the bandit to murder her husband. Tagiomaru refused, but the samurai, unable to bear the disgrace, killed himself. “Everyone is lying,” reflects the Buddhist priest in despair. From the temple, the cry of an abandoned baby is heard. The woodcutter, who already has six children, takes the baby to raise as his own.
