Giuseppe Sommario in “Spartenze, Restanze, Ritornanze”

The seventh appointment at the Bagni Paolieri in Quercianella for the event Without Pretenses – Balneare 2026, organized by Michele Cecchini, focuses on the theme of migratory phenomena of Italians overseas.
The appointment is for Monday, July 20 at 6.30 pm, for a free entry meeting titled: Departures, Stays, Returns – Anthropological categories of the lesser Italy. The expert in migratory phenomena Giuseppe Sommario, sticking to the theme of this edition of the event – the places – has chosen to talk about departures and returns as inseparable practices that redesign and give new meanings to the places.

The places in this case are the neighborhoods of American or European cities, and the many countries and villages in the inner areas of Italy. Those who leave leave their shadow in the country and constantly think about the day of their return; those who stay guard places and traditions while waiting for the return party. The theme of emigration is thus understood as a living experience, which continues to influence biographies and the identity of places: the stories of those who left, those who stayed, and those who return emerge through testimonies and stories, bringing attention to an event that has deeply marked the village but rarely finds space in public discourse.

“The need is to tell a story that concerns all of us -” explains Giuseppe Sommario – “that of a country that for over a century and a half has left, but has never stopped being tied to its places of origin.”
Giuseppe Sommario deals with Italian migratory phenomena, the linguistic history of cinema and theater, linguistic and cultural traditions of Calabria. After graduating in Cinema with a thesis at Sapienza in Rome, he has been ideating and directing for several years the “Piccolo Festival delle Spartenze. Migrations and Culture” dedicated to the theme of migrations. In 2004, he published a book on the film language of Troisi: “Massimo Troisi. The art of lightness.” Since 2020, he has been directing the series “Spartenze” (Ferrari Editore), is a founding member of the Permanent Observatory on Italian Roots (ORI) of AsSud.
