From May 1st to May 5th, tasting hours: from 10.30 am to 9.00 pm
This year the 5e5day will be five days long, the event that celebrates the chickpea cake in Livorno in its most characteristic pairing with French bread or “schiacciatina”, but without forgetting the variations with or without pepper or eggplant under pesto, or the loose cake.
From the first to the fifth of May, at the structures set up for Eden alla Terrazza Mascagni, the masters of the Associazione Tortai Livornesi CNA will be baking cakes continuously from 11 am onwards.
Also for this edition, the 5e5 will be offered at a promotional price to bring as many people as possible closer to this traditional element of Livorno cuisine. Last year, over 6,000 people, mainly tourists, tasted the chickpea cake in its variations, most of the time paired with the classic blonde foam.
In practice, a real live show cooking where you can see the “tortai” at work with the preparation of the mixture, the processing, and the cooking in the characteristic copper trays in the wood-fired ovens specially set up: then the fragrance and the scent of freshly cut bread or “schiacciatina”, the cake “boiling” in the middle and ready to taste in street food version all the Livorno tradition behind this dish. A recipe that has its origins even in the battles between the maritime republics of Genoa and Pisa right off the coast of the Terrazza Mascagni.
