The Ananassi Garden Company organizes two extraordinary screenings of: “Copperhead”, on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th May at 9 pm at the Teatro della Brigata, in via Brigata Garibaldi 4B Livorno, written by Gabriele Benucci and Andrea Gambuzza with Ilaria Di Luca and Andrea Gambuzza.
directed by Omar Elerian, scenographic elements by Stefano Pilato, sound environments by Giorgio De Santis, costumes by Adelia Apostolico, masks by Emidio Bosco.
“We decided to bring back Copperhead on stage because there are still many people, and entire generations, who have not had the opportunity to see it – comments Ilaria Di Luca – This story still has a lot to say, and we feel the need to make it relive today more than ever.
The two screenings have been scheduled precisely on the weekend when the first Festival of the Sea of our city is inaugurated. No one asked us, it’s true, but if Livorno celebrates the Sea, then Copperhead cannot be missed. It is a spontaneous, necessary tribute to our deep bond with the territory and its stories. Over time, Copperhead has become a small classic for us. An opera that we deeply feel ours and identity for our city like the Mascagni Terrace, the Four Moors, the 5 and 5, the Covered Market, the Cacciucco. It is a symbol of our community, of our way of living and telling.”
The show, produced and directed by the Orto degli Ananassi company, is written by Gabriele Benucci and Andrea Gambuzza, with Ilaria Di Luca and Andrea Gambuzza on stage.
Copperhead stems from an intense documentary research and a series of interviews with the protagonists and witnesses of Livorno in 1945. It is a social fresco that celebrates the life and difficulties of the divers, little-known but fundamental figures in the life of the port and in the reconstruction of the city.
The story takes place a few years after the Liberation, in a Livorno still marked by the war. Mario Cavicchi, called “Scintilla”, is a diver passionate about the sea and its mysteries. He shares life with Rosa, his wife: a woman with a strong, impulsive, and jealous character. A series of misunderstandings and unforeseen circumstances will force them to confront their fears and the love that binds them.
A love story, for sure, but also a collective tale of rebirth, of regained freedom, and of the courage necessary to rebuild a wounded but alive Italy.
