The usual cultural meetings organized by the Library of the Vespucci-Colombo Institute continue. On Monday, December 9th, at 6.00 pm, in the Aula Magna of the Piazza Vigo headquarters, there will be a talk on women and art, through the book by Cristina Bulgheri BERTHE MORISOT. PAINTER AT ALL COSTS (Paesi Edizioni 2024). In addition to the author, Catia Buselli from the publishing house Paesi Edizioni will be present. The event will be introduced by Francesca Luseroni, professor and reference of the Institute Library. The event is organized in collaboration with Erasmo Libri.

The book, accompanied by the delicate illustrations of Marina Cremonini, traces the childhood, adolescence, beginnings, and key stages of the life of the only female artist among the founders and inspirers of French Impressionism.

Berthe Morisot, an tireless experimenter, dedicated her entire life to painting, even though she was forced as a woman to train outside of official paths. After being excluded from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, she initially studied with the academic Joseph Guichard (a student of Eugène Delacroix), then with Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and finally with Édouard Manet. With the latter, she established a very close relationship that led her to pose for him multiple times as a model. In Morisot’s art, one can notice a predilection for “en plein air” painting, learned from Corot, and for unusual subjects and unusual points of view. She was united by a deep bond of friendship and esteem with the symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé, who celebrated the greatness of the painter multiple times.

Maria Cristina Bulgheri, born in Livorno, graduated from the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at the University of Pisa with a thesis on Dante. She taught for five years at elementary school before becoming a professional journalist: raised in the ranks of the daily newspaper Il Tirreno of Livorno, with which she still collaborates today, despite having returned to the classroom with older students: a swing between the world of schools and the world of newspapers linked to the birth of her three sons. Always, but especially thanks to them, she has established a special relationship with children’s literature. She published the book “C@ro Babbo Natale” (Felici Edizioni) and has received several awards in literary competitions.
