All the lost addresses

Einaudi – 2024

The monthly meetings of the “Milton” Reading Group at the Vespucci – Colombo Library continue. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, December 19th, at 6:00 PM, in the Aula Magna of the school building located at via Chiarini, 1.

The book selected for this month by the group members is “ALL THE LOST ADDRESSES” by Laura Imai Messina, published by Einaudi in 2024.

The book tells a collective story that starts from Risa, a doctoral student at the University of Tokyo, who lands at the Awashima Post Office, a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, in Japan, to catalog the letters that have been delivered in the last ten years and have no reachable recipient.

Quoting a passage from the book: “Like messages in bottles, they are words left to drift that do not expect a response. The whole point of writing these letters is, precisely, to write them.”

Laura Imai Messina was born in Rome and moved to Tokyo at the age of twenty-three. She teaches Italian at some of the most prestigious universities in the capital of Japan. She is the author of novels, essays, and stories for children.

Admission to the Reading Group, coordinated by Francesca Cordì, is free and open to the entire community. You don’t need to have read the book to participate, the aim is to discuss themes, writing, authors, and works similar to the selected one through discussions, reflections, and readings out loud, so that reading becomes a moment of sharing and reflection.
