The International Sailing Week (SVI) Naval Academy and City of Livorno will take place from April 19 to 28, 2024. The International Sailing Week is an important sports event in Tuscany, which includes a high number of sailing classes, both dinghies and offshore. “The ambition is to exceed the 600 sailors from last year, offering boat classes for everyone.” Currently confirmed for the Livorno stage of the national championship are the J24, flying junior, o’pen skiff, fireball, and wing foil classes, who will battle along the 10 km of coast from Livorno to Castiglioncello. Additionally, the Tridente 16 class will propose the “Naval Academies Regatta” (NAR), organized by the Naval Academy of Livorno, which last year saw 24 nations from 4 different continents involved and in 2024 will be part of the national championship.

Commander Fabiano then highlighted that the SVI is not just about sailing. It is a mix of social and cultural events along the entire coast: concerts, photo exhibitions, the artistic competition “The Sea and the Sails”, the vintage car rally, the display of Vespa Piaggio scooters, workshops on maritime art, and much more, not to mention the vintage and classic sails of the Navy that, in this context, mark the beginning of the training activities for future Officers.

As Dr. Andrea Mazzoni, President of the Committee of Livorno Sailing Clubs, pointed out, the International Sailing Week, thanks to the synergistic action of the 10 Livorno sailing clubs that work for about ten days to organize the sports event, offers the opportunity to approach the world of sailing at any level, also confirming the Hansa 303 and MR 2.4 classes, particularly suitable for people with disabilities and truly making sailing a inclusive sport.

During the conference, Professor Gian Luca Conti, President of the Yacht Club Livorno, had ample space to illustrate in detail the Regatta of the Naval Academy (RAN 630), the longest offshore regatta in the Mediterranean: 630 miles on the route Livorno – Porto Cervo – Capri – Livorno, sailed clockwise or counterclockwise depending on weather conditions. The race, with a factor of 3, is valid for the Italian offshore championship of the Italian Offshore Sailing Union (UVAI) and is organized under the auspices of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV). In 2024, the regatta will start on April 24, between sunset and full moon, with a deadline for arrival at 12:30 on May 1. Among the military crews, the MOVM Saverio Marotta Trophy is awarded to the first-classed boat.

The RAN 630, confirms Professor Conti, “thanking the main sponsor Officine Gullo, adheres to the ethical principles for the protection of the sea promoted by the One Ocean Foundation’s Smeralda Chart, the regatta’s sustainability partner”.
