Artemisia Gentileschi is a great artist of the ‘600s, and yet for too long, an episode of her life has ended up prevailing over her painting activity. In recent years, Artemisia Gentileschi has even become a true symbol of international feminism, a cult figure of women’s assertion and independence. The episode referred to is the trial brought by Orazio Gentileschi against his friend and colleague Agostino Tassi, who in May 1611 had raped his own eighteen-year-old daughter Artemisia.

In this way, the painter Artemisia has been neglected or shamefully forgotten for several centuries, with contemporaries and critics becoming more interested in her unusual biography than in her wonderful paintings.
