Santuzza loves without asking for permission, speaks when she should be silent, demands truth in a society built to silence women like her. In this musical reading, Paola Minaccioni gives voice and body to one of the most powerful characters in Italian melodrama: a modern woman trapped in the wrong time, who chooses – and pays – the price for that choice. Through the words and music of Pietro Mascagni, Santuzza becomes a mirror in which to recognize ancient and very current dynamics: control, blame reversal, the female body as a contested territory, the voice of women silenced by the male honor code. Because patriarchy is not archaeology. It’s the script that many still know by heart.
