The Elephant Man is a biographical film from 1980 directed by David Lynch. Adapted from the books The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences by Dr. Frederick Treves and The Elephant Man: A Study in Human Dignity by Ashley Montagu, the film was well-received at the time of its release and the success established the careers of its stars Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Hannah Gordon, and other cast members.

It tells the story of John Merrick, the elephant man, a deformity-stricken individual in Victorian proto-industrial London, reduced to a sideshow freak. The film received eight Oscar nominations and four Golden Globe nominations.

David Lynch (David Keith Lynch), director, producer, writer, screenwriter, and photographer, was born on January 20th, 1946, in Missoula, Montana (USA). In 2001, he won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival for the film Mulholland Drive.

Massimo Ghirlanda, graduated in Literary Theory with Remo Ceserani, is a teacher in high schools and one of the founders of the Centro Studi Commedia all’italiana in Castiglioncello, of which he has been the president since 2009.
