The Italian Navy, on the occasion of “Effetto Venezia” edition 2024, will open the gate of the ancient Lighthouse of Livorno, which has been lighting up the Livorno coast since 1300.

The Lighthouse is currently located inside the Azimut Benetti Shipyard. Built in the medieval era by the Republic of Pisa, later rebuilt due to damages from World War II, it is considered one of the oldest lighthouses in Italy.

Standing at 52 meters above sea level, the Major Lighthouse of Livorno is a rotating optic lighthouse powered by the electrical grid. The light is currently generated by a 1000 W halogen bulb, emitting 4 flashes every 20 seconds with a range of about 24 nautical miles. In the Medici era, the lighthouse operated with vegetable oil burners, then with petroleum, using reflecting mirrors to amplify the light. In 1841, the lantern was equipped with the first Fresnel lenses and an incandescent acetylene gas burner. Since 1911, the lighthouse has been managed by the Italian Navy.

The Lighthouse of Livorno will be open for visits on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 August from 09:00 to 13:00.

The visit is free and is only possible by reservation, entering from the entrance of the Azimut Benetti Shipyards at via Edda Fagni n.1 (Livorno).
