OF SOME UNUSUAL USES OF MUSIC IN CINEMA

The usual cultural meetings organized by the Library of the Vespucci-Colombo Institute continue. Wednesday, December 18, at 6.00 pm, in the Aula Magna of the Vespucci-Colombo Institute, piazza Vigo, 1, Marco Lenzi will talk about SOME UNUSUAL USES OF MUSIC IN CINEMA. The event is organized in collaboration with Erasmo Libri.

Proverbial ink rivers have been written about the relationship between music and cinema. Yet it seems to still be an inexhaustible topic, offering constant opportunities for reflection, always new and unpredictable. In Wednesday’s meeting, Marco Lenzi will show and discuss some ‘problematic’ examples, cases of musical choices by directors or composers that appear strange or misleading and seem to question some fundamental issues regarding the role and function of music in the film.

Films and music by Godard with music by Delerue and Piccioni, by Antonioni and Schroeder with music by Pink Floyd, by Welles with music by Albinoni, by Polanski with music by Chico Hamilton and by Verdone with music by Morricone will be reviewed.

Marco Lenzi was born in Livorno in 1967. Musician and teacher, he has been involved in contemporary music carrying out an intense seminar activity throughout Italy and publishing the first Italian monograph on Morton Feldman (Le Sfere Ricordi/Lim 2009) and various writings in specialized magazines (“Musica/Realtà”, “MusikTexte”, “Quaderni di Octandre”, “Nuova Civiltà delle Macchine”, “Tetraktys”). His compositions, edited by Ars Publica, have been performed in Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Spain, and the United States by soloists and ensembles such as Giancarlo Cardini, Livia Rado, Dario Calderone, Francesco Gesualdi, Ilaria Baldaccini, Riccardo Vaglini, Collettivo Rituale, L’Arsenale, Tubi&Corde, Ensemble Conductus, Bread Crumbs. He has collaborated with various rock musicians, including Anthony Reynolds and Virginiana Miller. He has been teaching in public schools for over thirty years.
